EDC based process: Ethylene amines are also manufactured via the EDC (ethylene dichloride) based process. In this process EDC is reacted with an excess of ammonia at high pressure and moderate temperature. The resultant ethylene amine hydrochloride solution is neutralised with caustic soda to form ethylene amines, which are subsequently isolated by distillation. Sodium chloride is formed as a by-product.
